How to Choose a Tradesperson: Quotes, Warranty and Payment Guide
A good professional does the job right and within the time promised. There are ways to tell in advance: ask the right questions, get the quote in writing and plan payment around the work. This guide lists what to check from before the job until after handover.
Check the profile and reviews
See whether the professional’s identity has been verified, how many jobs they have completed and what customers say. Read the content of the reviews, not only the score: what do people say about punctuality, tidiness and communication?
If they have shared photos of previous work, look through them; similar past jobs are a good sign.
Get more than one quote
Especially for bigger jobs, quotes from two or three professionals let you compare price and approach. The cheapest quote is not always the best; look at what it includes.
What the quote should state clearly
- Whether labour and materials are priced separately or together, and the brand and quality of materials
- Start and finish dates
- Who removes rubble or old parts afterwards
- The warranty on the work and how long it lasts
- How extra work will be priced if it comes up
Plan payment around the work
Avoid paying the whole amount up front. A reasonable deposit for materials is normal; pay the rest once the job is finished and checked. Keep a written or message record of what you paid.
At handover
- Test that everything works while the professional is there (taps, sockets, AC, doors)
- Point out any defects straight away and take photos
- Get the warranty terms and the invoice or receipt details
- Leave a review — it guides the next customers
Frequently asked questions
Should I pay a tradesperson in advance?
Paying the full amount up front is not recommended. A reasonable deposit for materials is fine; the rest should be paid once the work is finished and checked.
Why get the quote in writing?
A written quote fixes the scope, timing and price of the job and gives you a record to refer to if there is a disagreement later.
What if a problem appears after the job?
Tell the professional first; most give a warranty on their work. If you hired through UstamKKTC you can also contact the support team.
